Ontario's public-holiday guide lists nine public holidays under the Employment Standards Act. Civic Holiday is not on that list. That does not mean the day is quiet. It means managers should separate traffic planning from payroll assumptions.

For the Monday, August 3, 2026 long weekend, ask two questions. Will the restaurant be open or partly open? And what policy or local practice applies to the day for your team?

Put the answer in the schedule notes before publishing. If the business chooses special hours, extra pay, or a different time-off practice, the schedule should show the decision instead of leaving payroll to infer it later.

Plan Toronto differently from Niagara

Toronto service often needs late control. A manager may need someone who can close, handle a last patio turn, and keep expo calm after an event release. That is not the same as adding one more dinner server.

Niagara often needs wave control. The risk is not only total covers. It is bus groups, families, tasting-route timing, and patio tables arriving close together. A host, runner, and reset person can matter as much as one more section server.

Cottage country has its own pattern. Friday arrival and Sunday turnover can be harder than a normal weekday dinner. Do not bury the strongest closers on quiet midweek shifts if the weekend will carry the month.

Keep Ontario labour notes visible

Ontario's hours-of-work guide covers hours of work and eating periods, and the public-holiday guide explains the ESA holiday list. A restaurant schedule should not carry every rule. It should mark the shifts that need review.

Flag long shifts, close-to-open turns, short call-ins, employees near weekly overtime, and changes made after publishing. These notes are useful even when payroll is handled by a separate provider.

If students or young workers are part of the August roster, check the current Ontario guidance before using them to patch late changes. A quick fix can create a record problem if the manager does not capture what changed.
