Best tip pooling tools for a small restaurant in Canada: choose by the close
Compare Maxuod Shift, 7shifts, TipHaus and TipMetric by manual inputs, POS fit, reviewable reports and Canadian payout questions before buying.

For a small Canadian restaurant, the best tip pooling tool is the one that accepts your actual closing records and produces a breakdown someone else can check. Start with Maxuod Shift for entered totals and hours, 7shifts for an existing time-clock workflow, and TipHaus or TipMetric when evaluating dedicated tip management. None is a universal winner.
Disclosure: this publisher develops Maxuod Shift, one option below. Product documentation and public pricing pages were checked on October 6, 2026; this is a documented shortlist, not an independent speed test or purchasing advice. Product names belong to their owners. Confirm current terms before buying.
Bring one weekly close, not a feature wish list
Before looking at demos, assemble one completed week. The relevant inputs are the reconciled tip total, the participants and their worked hours, the approved distribution rule, and the record your payroll reviewer expects. Keep service charges or unresolved amounts identifiable rather than quietly adding everything into one number.
- Source: who checks cash and card totals, and where corrections are recorded.
- Hours: whether each row is worked time or a planned shift awaiting review.
- Roles: what happens when a funded role has nobody working.
- Output: employee detail, a total that reconciles, and visible exceptions.
If you still need to choose the distribution method, use the tip-sharing method guide first. A software demonstration should test an approved rule, not decide it for the team.
Take the branch your records support
You enter a checked total
Compare a spreadsheet with a standalone calculator. The useful question is whether another manager can reproduce the result without rebuilding hidden formulas. An integration brings little value if the source records still need manual reconciliation.
Your POS and time clock supply the records
Test the exact system, edition and employee mapping. A compatible logo does not establish which tip fields arrive, how a corrected shift is refreshed, or whether somebody still uploads a file.
You need money sent to employees
Make payment support a separate requirement. A calculated employee amount, a payroll export and a completed bank transfer are different outputs. Do not choose a calculation-only tool expecting it to handle all three.
Four tools and the job each can handle
Maxuod Shift: entered totals and reviewable exports
The public calculator needs no account. It supports Hours and Role % + hours, exact-cent allocation, three explicit empty-role choices, and PDF/CSV results. It fits a reviewed manual close; it has no direct POS connection or payout service.
7shifts: an existing time-clock workflow
Its Tip Pooling documentation requires Time Clocking and supports manual contributions or supported POS data. It is an add-on with a trial, not automatically a free feature. Check the location's setup and the paid-versus-owed formula settings before accepting the report.
TipHaus: evaluate the connected calculation workflow
Its calculation page describes POS-fed tip rules. The 7shifts integration uses employee, shift and job-code data and requires matched employee names and emails. Ask for your actual payroll export. Canadian digital payouts remain unverified here.
TipMetric: evaluate a dedicated tip-record system
Its product page describes editable areas, shifts, positions and employees, employee tip review and weekly reports. Request a sample handoff file and a correction demonstration. The inspected page does not establish Canadian payout support; confirm service availability and billing currency with the vendor.
Make the demonstration handle an awkward week
Use a fictional test close: a $680.03 pool, one corrected server shift, and a support role with a percentage but zero eligible hours. Ask each candidate to show where the unsupported role's share goes, how cents reconcile, and what changes after the time correction. These are proposed tests, not results from a vendor trial.
Keep the original input and exported employee rows. A reviewer should be able to connect the source total to distributed and unallocated amounts. Reject an unexplained difference even if the screen looks polished.
Give the export to a second manager without the demonstration notes. Ask them to identify the period, employee hours, applied rule and amounts awaiting a decision. List any missing fields, unexplained corrections and remaining re-entry work. This checks your restaurant's handoff, not the vendor's overall product quality.
In a saved Maxuod Shift account, tip groups connect to the week’s stored shift records. Check those times against approved evidence of work before calculating or locking the week. An unlocked week displays a planned-hours warning; locking it does not automatically reconcile clock records or prove that the stored times are actual. The product does not determine tip eligibility, tax classification, transmit funds or run payroll.

Ask the Canadian payment question separately
Ask the vendor to confirm, in writing, whether the proposed service accepts your Canadian business, pays in CAD to the employee's intended account, and supports your province and payroll provider. Include settlement timing, employee onboarding, fees, failed transfers and refund handling. Public payout marketing does not answer those account-specific questions.
The 7shifts non-US page distinguishes tip reporting from automatic taxation. Reporting settings are not a Canadian tax decision. Have the policy and payroll treatment reviewed separately; the policy template provides the record structure, not approval.

Keep a spreadsheet if it passes the same check
Request a quote covering the required plan, tip add-on, setup, integrations and payment fees, with currency and billing term specified. Compare that whole scope, not two headline monthly prices. A paid subscription does not settle missing source records.
If a protected spreadsheet already produces a checked close and a usable handoff, keep it; the Excel guide covers that route. Otherwise, shortlist two options from the relevant branch and ask each to reproduce the same week. Choose only after your reviewer can explain the result and the remaining manual work.
